What's a "small molecule?"

For Biotex SM™, a "small molecule" is defined to be any of the following:

A synthetic organic chemical used as a pharmaceutical, generally in the range of 100-1000 MW

A semi-synthetic compound, i.e., an antibiotic or carbohydrate that starts with a naturally derived material (fermented or extracted from a natural material) that undergoes one or more synthetic chemical steps to yield an API.

A peptide, regardless of length, that is assembled from its component amino acids either by solution or solid phase synthesis. Molecular weights can vary from a few hundred units to several thousand. Fuzeon® (Trimeris/Roche), an AIDS drug, is a 36 amino acid peptide. It is obtained entirely by synthesis from its component amino acids. This drug is considered a small molecule. Insulin, a 51 amino acid peptide (technically a protein), obtained either by extraction of animal tissue or directly by fermentation, is an example of a peptide that is not a small molecule.

An oligonucleotide or polysaccharide assembled from its component parts or small sub-units by synthesis, using chemical and/or enzymatic means.

A polymer used as a pharmaceutical. Genzyme's Renagel® is an example

A natural product extracted from vegetable or animal material. The original Taxol® isolation is an example.

What's a "biotech" company?

For Biotex SM™, a "biotech" company is a small, relatively new pharmaceutical company whose primary function is drug discovery and/or development. With some exceptions, most of the companies in Biotex SM™ have little or no sales or profits. These companies are referred to by some people as "emerging" pharmaceutical companies.

Many of the companies in Biotex SM™ are also called virtual companies because they have no manufacturing or sales staffs, and they outsource many, if not all, of the activities involved in the pharmaceutical development process.

Biotex SM™ does not include companies whose primary business is generic drugs; companies that are actually a division or subsidiary of a larger pharmaceutical or other industrial company; companies whose primary business is only selling their own or others' products; with a few exceptions, fully integrated pharmaceutical companies; companies providing supplies and/or contract services.

Company Technologies

This search feature allows the database user to select one of several general technology categories. All of the biotech companies in the Biotex SM™ database have been classified into one or more of these general areas based on the types of products they are developing. The largest technology category is "Small Molecules - General". This category includes those companies that cannot be classified in any of the specific technology areas.

The twelve technology categories are:

Carbohydrates
Chemical Libraries
High Potency Compounds
Inorganics
Natural Products
Nucleotides
Peptides
Polymers
Radiopharmaceuticals
Semi-Synthetics
Small Molecules - General
Targeted Therapeutics

Regions

To facilitate searches of geographic areas, the U.S. and Canada are divided, by states and provinces, into twelve geographic regions. The user can search for companies in any of these regions, which include the following:

Countries

The Country dropdown menu includes countries in which there are four or more companies in the database.

Metro Areas

For the U.S., the Metro Area dropdown menu includes cities in which there are ten or more companies located within a fifty mile radius of the city. For cities outside the U.S., Metro Areas are cities in which there are five or more companies within a fifty mile radius.

Search Tips

There are three Search blocks on the Biotex SM™ search page: (1) Companies/Products, (2) Alliances, and (3) Contacts. Searches can be narrowed by selecting multiple fields in a single search block; however, searches cannot be conducted using more than one search block.
